Real time tracking a Three Peaks Race first

For the 2008 Three Peaks Race each yacht was fitted with a real time tracker. While there have been many races in Australia and around the world over recent years that have used satellite tracking systems what makes our tracking system unique is theGoogle Earth example use of the locally constructed Datacall Telemetry System and the transmission of data via Telstra's Next G network.

Linked to Google Earth, the tracks of all yachts could be observed as they progressed around the course. The latitude and longitude of each yacht was collected from a GPS unit and transmitted via the mobile phone network for display on ther internet. An example above shows yachts tacking to windward as they approach Flinders Island.

Another feature was the use of webcams on 12 of the yachts giving a snapshot at every 15 minutes or less throughout the race.

Each year competitors are drawn from most Australian states and often there is a number of international competitors, mostly runners.

For competitors it offers an interesting alternative for the yachting fraternity and a challenging new activity for runners, climbers and bushwalkers.

It is this unique combination of the two disparate disciplines which provides for such a challenging event.

International challenge

Runners from Israel who have competed in the British Three Peaks Race competed with the first-time team from Victorian aboard the Beneteau 373, Aphrodite. Runner/sailor Alon Peled visiting Australia for the first time is the only person to compete in the three major sailing and endurance running races, the British Three Peaks Race, our Australian race, the Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race and the Scottish Islands Peaks Race. For the record Alon said that the Tasmanian race was the most challenging of all three.

Record fleet for 2008 so close!

The record fleet size of 30 teams set in 1989, the inaugural race, was under threat for a long time but final entries lodged were 28. One team had to withdraw prior to the start placing 27 yachts lining up on Good Friday.

The Race

The Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race is a non-stop event, commencing at Beauty Point just north of Launceston on the Tamar River and finishing in Hobart on the Derwent River. En-route, the running members of each team have to scale Mt Strzelecki, Mt Freycinet and Mt Wellington.

The east-coast course around Tasmania affords the best combinations of suitable mountains, coastal centres, accessibility for followers, press crews and the public. It brings publicity and exposure to two of the more beautiful but remote areas of the State, Flinders Island and the Freycinet Peninsula, and takes competitors, supporting groups and the media the length of the beautiful east coast.

For competitors it offers an interesting alternative for the yachting fraternity and a challenging new activity for runners, climbers and bushwalkers. It is this unique combination of the two disparate disciplines which provides for such a challenging event.
